Badass at suspense, sex and love
In my opinion, there is no character more badass and alpha than a Navy SEAL. There is just something about them that putting themselves on the line in the most dangerous of situations, the peak physical condition (e.g. big, huge muscles) and their lust for adrenaline – either in work or play that combines to make an ideal BBF.
So when the opportunity came to review a book by a lady that is just as badass at bringing these characters to life, I knew that I couldn’t knock back the opportunity.
And let me tell you, Corinne Michaels well and truly delivered in her latest book, Defenseless. For those out there that don’t know Corinne or any of her work, this book is romantic suspense. She has written two other duets with interconnecting characters, but this can be read as a STANDALONE.
One of the best things that I liked about this book is that never did I feel that the suspense or the romance aspect outweighed the other in the delivery of the story. And it really did have plenty of both. Mark is an ex-Navy SEAL that has made it his mission to find out what or who is attacking his team. At the most inappropriate time he is knocked sidewards by Charlie. What he doesn’t realise is that in a roundabout way, Charlie is also chasing the same bad guy but for different reasons. Once they discover the connection in their mystery, the two come together to mutually serve their own purposes. The coming together and partnership ends up being more than just business.
What I loved a lot about this book was that it proved you don’t have to be male to be badass. Corinne did an amazing job of making Charlie, the female lead, with a bucket load of tenacity. She also demonstrated that while being badass is awesome – it is okay to let go into something that you love. To experience that you don’t always have to be watching your back when you have someone that is willing and able to do it for you for absolutely nothing to gain in exchange – other than their deep need for you. Corinne proved that you don’t lose your power because you are in love or with a male that wants or needs to be in control. But rather you could possibly find a piece of yourself that you didn’t realise was missing.
The chemistry was sizzling between this pair and was often intensified by their bickering and bantering. It was in the moments where it looked like these two were about to have a full head on collision that fuelled some of the sexiest parts of this book. And man where they hot. All explicit, no fade to black.
Corinne is amazing at weaving a tale that captures readers in her web, giving us characters to love, humour to break it up and flawless writing to navigate the book seamlessly.
This is a must read if you are a fan of romantic suspense.

“I made you a promise, Charlie.” Mark’s already deep voice is layered with desire.
Once again, my control begins to slip. “What’s that?”
His hands drop a little lower beside my head. His lower body shifts so his knee is between my legs. I feel his arousal against my thigh.
My traitorous body shows its own awakening. My nipples hardening through the silk material don’t go unnoticed. Heat pools in my core and my breath hitches. I want him. There’s no use denying it.
“I told you I’d kiss you again. If you don’t stop me now, there’s no getting away.”
I should stop him. I need to stop him. There’s no way in hell it’s going to happen, though. I’m craving his lips again.
He gives me one second before he crushes his mouth against mine. His entire body shifts forward, and now I’m trapped. There’s nowhere to go. Nowhere to move that’s not Mark. He takes every part of my mind and body. Our hands roam each other as his tongue slides against mine. Passion ignites between us; it sets the room on fire. His fingers cup my neck and then glide down the front of my dress. His hand brands my skin as he takes his time exploring the open skin between us.
My fingers grip the lapels of his tux, holding him, molding him to me. I can’t get close enough. Our mouths stay fused as we both lose control.
Then my mind snaps.
I push back and my hands fly to my lips. They’re swollen, bruised from the force of the kiss. His hands brace against the wall. I keep my eyes downcast. I can’t believe I just did that, against the damn wall, at a ball commemorating my father.
I shift my dress, rake my fingers through my hair, and pull myself together.
“Charlie . . .” Mark finally speaks. It sounds like shouting even though it’s only loud enough for us to hear.
“That was the last time that will ever happen,” I say with no tremor to my voice. “Tonight we become partners. It’s not about whatever this is.” I shift my hands between us. “It’s about finding the information we’re both searching for.”
“And what if we find something else?”
“We shut it down. There’s no room for feelings in this world.”
Mark pushes back, giving me space. I instantly feel cold. “Okay, then. Have it your way.”
This is what I wanted, what we both need, but suddenly I wish it wasn’t. I wish I could pull him close, kiss him, fuck him, and just feel.
But wishes are for little girls.
